Alexandre Matos graduated in Visual Arts from Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) in 2006. He works as a visual artist and illustrator from his studio in Lisbon and is also an artist-in-residence at Tijolo Oficina.
 

Working across drawing, painting and ceramics, Matos investigates simple lines and concise compositions. He alternately isolates and multiplies figures within the aerial, empty space of the support, exploring the relationships between image, language and imagination.
 

In his most recent series, Matos combines images of birds that recur in his dreams with words that emerge from his psychoanalytic sessions. Men, birds and language come together in a visual syntax in which thought, desire and the word seek a body. Rather than representing the unconscious, the artist explores ways of giving it form, making visible images that inhabit the interval between the real and the imagined.
